Healthy Kids First
NEW HAVEN - Fitting physical exercise into the school day is not an easy task, especially given the increasing academic requirements that face young people. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Mayo and the Citywide Nutrition Committee on Wednesday will announce an $85,000 grant from the Connecticut Health Foundation that will help the school system integrate physical activity directly into the classroom. The funding was obtained as part of the New Haven Public Schools’ ongoing Healthy Kids First initiative, which has removed junk food and soda from school vending machines; improved school meals and addressed exercise for kids. The announcement takes place Wednesday, February 15, 2006, 11 a.m. at Katherine Brennan school, where second graders and their teacher will demonstrate some of the exercises during a break between classes. Katherine Brennan is located at 200 Wilmot Road, in the West Rock section. In an effort to reduce childhood obesity and to meet a recent unfunded state mandate that requires all students in K-5th grade to receive a daily period of physical activity, the one-year grant will support the integration of physical activity into the classroom setting.
